I hope this doesn't sound a stupid question, but I'm sure that the following is wrong:

Though Hepburn (like her character) underwent weeks of vocal coaching for her singing part in this role, in the final cut her part was dubbed, without her knowledge, by Marni Nixon.

It is part of the NFT's description of 'My Fair Lady', but I thought that Hepburn knew she had been dubbed, that Nixon visited her on the set, and that Hepburn admired her work,

Can anyone confirm this?

Thank you

Dominic

Hi Dominic,

The way I heard it, Hepburn wanted to do all her own singing. However, once production had started and the soundtrack pre-recording sessions had begun, the decision was taken ( probably by Andre Previn ) that Audrey should be dubbed. As far as I know, she did do, at least, two songs " Wouldn't It Be Loverly" and "Show Me" and while Marni Nixon re-recorded these for the final film, Audrey's performances are certainly included on the laser disc ( which I have) and may be on the DVD ( which I don't have ). Actually, she's fine on "Loverly" but she has a little trouble on "Show Me" - so maybe it was the right decision to bring in Nixon.

The best solution of all,of course, would have been to use Julie Andrews.
But it's too late for that now. I still like the movie though.

Ken
