I couldn't help noticing the increasing interest in classic films by younger people. I was suprised to see that Mr. Mark Fisk was only 15 years and Dominic McHugh is 18.

Perhaps the DVD medium itself has something to do with this.
But just as likely is the fact that these great films are being shown less and less on regular TV these days ( cable and satellite offer exceptions with Turner Classic Movies, etc). The DVD, however, is the one true medium for movie collectors - especially when they are as good as the
Laureate presentations. Like everyone else, I'm looking forward eagerly to the new boxed sets.

In the last 12 months, we've had such landmark DVDs such as
"The Man With The Golden Arm," "Holiday Inn" and "Citizen Kane." All of them blessed with marvellous extras and the
superbly informative audio commentaries of Mr. Ken Barnes.

And, as for next year, I can only say the more the merrier.

Dear Jim

You have made some interesting points there! As it happens, I grew up preferring older, classic films; one of my earliest movie memories is of watching 'Top Hat' when I was about four years old. I have since worn out the tape almost completely, so I am delighted at the prospect of a good DVD presentation of this and some of the other F & G films.

I quite agree about the lack of good films on the television nowadays. I remember that a few Christmases ago there was a series over about two weeks of the Arthur Freed musicals, allowing me and no doubt others to see 'The Band Waggon' et al. Last Christmas I think the only musical on terrestrial television was the inevitable 'White Christmas'. It really doesn't help the reputation of these lesser-known films that it is almost impossible to see them anywhere!

It's great that this forum allows such a wide range of people to discuss a common interest, and that the Laureate company is taking notice of them.

Best wishes.

Dominic McHugh

PS I am now 19!

Hi Dominic,

We're always glad to hear from you - a 19 year old with excellent taste. I think you'll like what we've done with Fred and Ginger. I happened to catch a glimpse of "Carefree" on BBC TV last week and was horrified at the poor quality picture. I'm sure you'll be pleased at the quality on the upcoming DVD boxed set.

My thanks for your always welcome interest.

Best
Ken
